Take a look in the mirror. Are your jeans bagging at the knees? Is that sweater you’re wearing the same one your mom got you for Christmas eight years ago? Face it dude—it’s time for a wardrobe revamp. Now, before you get all weirded out, this isn’t like a “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy”-style intervention. It’s a simple list of classic pieces every guy should own, OK? So check out our list of the top 9 men's must haves.
#1 Have at Least One Good Suit in the Closet
No matter what your job is, you’re going to need a decent suit at some point.
If you’re in a field where you’re going to wear one regularly you should look for a variety of colors and styles; if you just need a single suit for infrequent dress occasions stick with a classic single-breasted, two-button suit in charcoal gray or navy blue.
It’s worth the effort — sized suits are made to general measurements, and not all of them are going to be a perfect fit for you. A good tailor can make the small changes that take your suit from looking mediocre to perfect for you.
#2 Build from White and Blue Shirts
White and light blue cotton dress shirts are the backbone to a sharp wardrobe.
Much of this lies in the fact both of these colors make up approximately 90% of the dress shirts sold worldwide and that either color looks good on most complexions and body types.
Patterns can liven up the basic white and blue color palette, and there’s nothing wrong with branching out into some other colors as your personal style evolves. Just have a good core of white and blue dress shirts. As long as you have one clean and hanging up in the closet, you’ll never be completely out of decent-looking things to wear.
#3 Dark blue straight-leg Jeans
Straight-leg jeans are a great middle ground for guys who aren’t into a super-skinny pant. They’re tailored enough to make you look put together, but will give you more “leg room” (so to speak) than the skinny hipster alternative.
You can wear jeans with a fitted T-shirt for a relaxed, casual look or dress them up with a buttoned shirt and a sport coat for a business-casual style.
#4 Leather loafers
Kick your style up a notch with a great pair of lace-up leather boots. If you choose the right pair, you’ll be able to wear them with both jeans and trousers. Lean toward a shoe that looks more formal, rather than rugged.
If penny loafers seem like too big a step, try wearing a pair of venetian loafers first.
#5 Classic trench-coat
Personally, I’m a big fan of the pea coat, but something like an overcoat or duffle coat will work just as well.
#6 Versatile blazer
A navy blazer is once of classic men's must haves that will never let you down. It will match especially well with the camel chinos, and will also look great with your dark blue jeans.
The true sign of a stylish man? The way he dresses while relaxing. It’s easy to fall into the trap of sloppy loungewear, so don’t be a victim. Ditch the hoody with the name of your college emblazoned on it, and go for a plain, fitted crew-neck sweatshirt instead. They’re just as comfortable and will convince people you’re a grown-up (even if you still crush beers like a frat boy).
#7 Grey V-neck sweater
Wear it over your shirts and T-shirt to stay warm during the winter months. You can also wear a blazer over it when it gets especially cold.
#8 White Crew neck T-shirtIt’s time to toss those grungy Hanes t-shirts you’ve been wearing since you were 12. We know the cheap 4-packs from Target are tempting, but now that you’re an adult, invest in a well-made version. Trust us, you’ll notice a major difference in both the fit and feel.
You can wear it with anything.
You should have a couple of these in your closet. Go for V-necks as well as crew necks for variety’s sake.
You should focus first on assembling the clothes that are basic men’s wardrobe essentials or 9 men's must haves. The clothes above are all Grade A versatile. This makes them easy to mix and match. Combining them into a bad outfit is nearly impossible (unless you get the fit wrong, of course). The clothes below should be your first investments. They are the clothes that will help you restart your style.
