Your Perfect Colors | The Right Colors For Your Skin Tone

Most guys don’t spend a lot of time on the idea of “seasonal colors” in clothing.

It’s just not very manly to talk about “being an autumn.”

But the seasonal groupings still come up often enough that we figured a cheat-sheet wouldn’t hurt.

This is the most painless breakdown of what the heck people talk about when they start doing the seasons thing to you:

Seasonal Colors as Complexions

Your Perfect Colors | The Right Colors For Your Skin Tone

The more common use of the seasonal descriptors is to group types of human complexions.

Skin tends to have either a faint bluish or yellowish tint — not enough to be readily apparent in normal life, but a strong enough coloration that some shades make better matches or contrasts than others.

Everyone skews a little bit toward either the blue skin tone or the yellow skin tone, regardless of their skin color.

The seasonal breakdown came along as a way to group those basic blue-tone and yellow-tone skins.

Different authors have applied the system to cosmetic concerns ranging from clothing styles to make-up and hair products.

Take it with a grain of salt — not everyone fits perfectly into one grouping alone — but here are the very basic seasonal complexions:

  • Winters have skin with a blue-tone base (usually pale) and hair/eyes that contrast sharply with their skin.
  • Summers have the same blue-tone skin but only gently contrast with their other features.
  • Springs have yellow-tone skin with light-colored eyes/hair.
  • Autumns have yellow-tone skin but darker hair, which often creates more contrast that Springs.

The basic idea is that the top two (winter and summer) should wear “cooler” colors and the lower two (spring and autumn) do well in “warmer” colors.

The higher-contrast seasons (winter and autumn) wear clothing with deeper contrasts, while the lower-contrast seasons (summer and spring) wear lots of matching or associated colors.

Here are some guidelines which will help you establish which category you fall into. We will offer some advice for each “season” in terms of the colors they should or should not wear as well.  Read the descriptions below and you should be able to tell where you fit best:

Autumn in their palettes has no navy, pink or gray.

When choosing a suit, you should pick warm, olives, golden browns and rich warm grays. You will glow in these harmonious environmental colors. Avoid clear bright shades, pure white and black which will make you look tired and faded. Also, avoid true pastel colors which will look cold against your complexion, giving you a pale and sickly appearance. Your shirt, in particular, should never be true white for this reason. Choose oyster and ecru (eggshell) instead.

Because you have a lot of visual contrast you can pull off deep, rich colors accented with jewel tones, and even wear bright white or icy pastels. A dark suit with cool undertones like dark navy, charcoal or black will complement your dynamic coloring. Avoid earth tones which can make you look sallow, and muted or powdery colors which can make you look shadowed. Remember, accents should be vibrant, and intense jewel tones. Be as bold as nature created you to be.

There are more winters in the world than any other seasonal type and the winters are the only ones who can wear black and pure white well. Also, Winters should not wear any brown or orange because it will make them look yellow and sick, and that’s not how anyone want to look.

More famous Winter men: Nicholas Cage, Pierce Brosnan, Kenau Reeves, Robert Downey Jr, Ethan Hawke, Charlie Sheen, Richard Gere, Antonio Banderas, Johhny Deep, Eddie Murphy, Denzel Washington, Javier Bardem, Sean Connery, Jackie Chan.
